A Few Words About Us

Gourmet Gurus was born out of successful coffee café, The Food Fundi, owned by Prue Leith graduate and Lowveld-born lad, Jason Powell.

What began as small-scale catering for Nelspruit corporates and bespoke Lowveld weddings is now a stand-alone catering operation with its own industrial kitchen. The Gourmet Gurus team understands that food can make or break your event, that’s why our personalised service ensures fresh, innovative ideas, beautiful presentation, and bold flavours. We source local, seasonal ingredients as far as possible from the Lowveld’s own gourmet pantry, from local avos and macadamia nuts, to fresh water trout, organically grown micro herbs and greens, and farm-fresh dairy products. Although we specialise in high-quality, gourmet fare, we create wonderful informal feasts as well. Personal involvement is imperative to us, and through constant interaction with our clients we ensure that their dreams come true. We strive to offer a unique culinary experience, every time. Although we specialize in functions up to 500 people, we have vast experience in catering for large-scale events. The Gurus may be Nelspruit-based, but we go where our clients require us. Contact us for personalised menus and quotations for our seasonal canapés, plated meals, or buffet-style cuisine for your tailor-made experience.

The Gurus

We don’t use the term lightly!

Our team has over 50 years’ combined experience, from VIP food for the Oppikoppi festival, to cooking for Madiba on a private island and VVIP catering for heads of State for the Africa Cup of Nations, to romantic bush weddings in the Timbavati and international conferences in the world renowned Kruger National Park; the Gurus have pretty much done it all.

Jason Powell

Jason began his career being the designated “braai guy” for his school mates, lovingly marinading the chicken while everyone else bantered around the fire. After dabbling in sailing and a commerce degree, he flourished at the esteemed Prue Leith Chef’s Academy. He went on to be head chef at luxury resort Vamizi, where he hosted the likes of Nelson Mandela and Sven-Göran Eriksson. He then became head chef at Norway’s exclusive Osen Gard lodge before returning to South Africa. His strengths lie in being an all round nice, accommodating guy (no, really, he’ll bend over backwards!), and in his talent for creating the perfect menu to suit your location and style of event. He makes a mean Thai-style seafood broth, and a double-chocolate swirl baked cheesecake that melts even the stoniest of hearts; among other things of course!

Paul and Natalie French

Dynamic duo Paul and Natalie have decades of experience in the hotel and hospitality industry. In fact, their love of hospitality is what brought them together when they met at the Lowveld landmark, Hotel Promenade, where Natalie managed the banqueting and events and Paul ran the kitchens. While Paul’s background saw him commanding bustling hotel kitchens for the Southern Sun group (now Tsogo Sun), Natalie’s strengths lay in event management, banqueting, and client liaison, which is why they are the perfect addition to The Gurus team. Their combined experience ensures that your event is in the very safest of hands.
